Ransomware : Your Crippling Information Technology Catastrophe
Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyberplague that presents an enterprise-level danger for businesses vulnerable to an attack. Versions of crypto-ransomware like the CrySIS, Fusob, Locky, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for many years and still cause damage. Recent strains of crypto-ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, LockBit or Nephilim, along with frequent unnamed malware, not only do encryption of online data but also infiltrate all available system protection mechanisms. Information replicated to the cloud can also be encrypted. In a vulnerable data protection solution, it can render automated restore operations useless and effectively knocks the datacenter back to zero.
Retrieving services and information after a ransomware intrusion becomes a race against the clock as the victim fights to contain, eradicate the crypto-ransomware, and resume business-critical operations. Because ransomware takes time to move laterally, assaults are frequently launched at night, when successful penetrations in many cases take longer to recognize. This multiplies the difficulty of rapidly mobilizing and orchestrating an experienced mitigation team.
Progent makes available an assortment of help services for securing businesses from crypto-ransomware events. Among these are user education to help recognize and not fall victim to phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, plus setup and configuration of the latest generation security appliances with artificial intelligence technology from SentinelOne to detect and quarantine zero-day threats automatically. Progent in addition provides the services of seasoned ransomware recovery engineers with the talent and commitment to reconstruct a breached environment as soon as possible.
Progent's Ransomware Restoration Help
Following a ransomware invasion, even paying the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not ensure that merciless criminals will provide the needed codes to unencrypt any of your data. Kaspersky Labs estimated that seventeen percent of ransomware victims never recovered their information after having sent off the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The risk is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are typically several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can reach millions. The fallback is to re-install the essential components of your Information Technology environment. Without access to complete data backups, this requires a wide range of IT skills, well-coordinated project management, and the ability to work continuously until the job is complete.
For two decades, Progent has provided expert IT services for companies across the U.S. and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts includes consultants who have earned advanced industry certifications in important technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's security engineers have garnered internationally-recognized certifications including CISA, CISSP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has experience with financial management and ERP application software. This breadth of expertise provides Progent the capability to rapidly ascertain critical systems and integrate the remaining pieces of your IT environment after a ransomware attack and rebuild them into a functioning system.
Progent's security group utilizes powerful project management systems to coordinate the complex restoration process. Progent knows the urgency of working quickly and together with a customer's management and IT team members to prioritize tasks and to get essential services back on line as soon as humanly possible.
Customer Case Study: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Penetration Recovery
A client engaged Progent after their network system was taken over by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is believed to have been created by Northern Korean state hackers, suspected of adopting technology leaked from America's National Security Agency. Ryuk targets specific companies with little or no tolerance for operational disruption and is one of the most lucrative incarnations of crypto-ransomware. Headline victims include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a small manufacturing company located in the Chicago metro area with around 500 workers. The Ryuk intrusion had disabled all business operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's data protection had been directly accessible at the start of the attack and were destroyed. The client considered paying the ransom (more than $200K) and wishfully thinking for good luck, but ultimately reached out to Progent.
"I can't thank you enough about the expertise Progent gave us during the most fearful period of (our) company's existence. We may have had to pay the criminal gangs if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent experts afforded us. That you could get our messaging and essential applications back online sooner than a week was incredible. Each staff member I talked with or communicated with at Progent was laser focused on getting us working again and was working all day and night on our behalf."
Progent worked with the customer to rapidly get our arms around and prioritize the key services that needed to be restored in order to restart business functions:
- Active Directory (AD)
- Microsoft Exchange Email
- Financials/MRP
To begin, Progent adhered to Anti-virus penetration mitigation industry best practices by isolating and clearing up compromised systems. Progent then initiated the steps of recovering Microsoft Active Directory, the core of enterprise environments built on Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange Server messaging will not operate without AD, and the customer's accounting and MRP applications leveraged SQL Server, which depends on Windows AD for security authorization to the data.
Within 2 days, Progent was able to recover Active Directory services to its pre-virus state. Progent then helped perform reinstallations and storage recovery on needed servers. All Microsoft Exchange Server data and attributes were usable, which facilitated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was able to locate local OST data files (Outlook Offline Data Files) on team PCs to recover email data. A not too old off-line backup of the businesses financials/MRP systems made them able to recover these essential services back online for users. Although major work remained to recover totally from the Ryuk virus, core services were returned to operations rapidly:
"For the most part, the production line operation did not miss a beat and we produced all customer sales."
Throughout the next couple of weeks key milestones in the recovery project were completed in close cooperation between Progent team members and the customer:
- Internal web sites were brought back up without losing any information.
- The MailStore Server exceeding four million historical emails was restored to operations and available for users.
- CRM/Orders/Invoices/AP/Accounts Receivables (AR)/Inventory modules were completely restored.
- A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was set up and programmed.
- Most of the desktops and laptops were functioning as before the incident.
"Much of what transpired in the early hours is nearly entirely a haze for me, but my management will not forget the care each of the team put in to help get our company back. I've trusted Progent for the past 10 years, maybe more, and every time Progent has shined and delivered as promised. This time was no exception but maybe more Herculean."
Conclusion
A potential business extinction catastrophe was evaded with top-tier experts, a broad spectrum of knowledge, and close teamwork. Although upon completion of forensics the crypto-ransomware penetration detailed here would have been identified and disabled with up-to-date cyber security technology solutions and recognized best practices, staff training, and well thought out security procedures for data backup and keeping systems up to date with security patches, the fact is that government-sponsored cybercriminals from China, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and are an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a ransomware attack, remember that Progent's roster of professionals has a proven track record in ransomware virus defense, remediation, and file recovery.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others who were involved), thank you for allowing me to get rested after we made it past the initial push. All of you did an fabulous effort, and if any of your guys is in the Chicago area, a great meal is on me!"
