Ransomware : Your Crippling Information Technology Disaster
Ransomware has become an escalating cyberplague that poses an existential threat for businesses of all sizes poorly prepared for an assault. Versions of crypto-ransomware such as CryptoLocker, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been replicating for many years and still inflict damage. Newer versions of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Conti or Egregor, along with frequent as yet unnamed viruses, not only encrypt online data but also infiltrate many accessible system protection mechanisms. Information synched to the cloud can also be ransomed. In a poorly architected environment, this can make any restoration hopeless and effectively sets the entire system back to square one.
Getting back on-line applications and data following a ransomware intrusion becomes a sprint against time as the victim struggles to stop lateral movement, eradicate the ransomware, and restore enterprise-critical operations. Due to the fact that crypto-ransomware requires time to replicate, attacks are frequently launched on weekends, when successful attacks typically take more time to identify. This compounds the difficulty of rapidly mobilizing and coordinating a knowledgeable mitigation team.
Progent makes available a range of solutions for securing businesses from ransomware events. These include staff education to help recognize and not fall victim to phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, in addition to installation of the latest generation security solutions with machine learning technology from SentinelOne to detect and disable day-zero cyber threats rapidly. Progent also can provide the assistance of veteran ransomware recovery engineers with the track record and commitment to restore a compromised environment as rapidly as possible.
Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Restoration Support Services
Following a ransomware invasion, paying the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that cyber criminals will respond with the keys to unencrypt all your information. Kaspersky ascertained that 17% of ransomware victims never restored their data after having paid the ransom, resulting in more losses. The gamble is also very costly. Ryuk ransoms are typically a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can reach millions. The fallback is to piece back together the critical parts of your Information Technology environment. Without the availability of complete data backups, this requires a broad range of IT skills, top notch project management, and the ability to work non-stop until the task is done.
For two decades, Progent has offered expert IT services for companies throughout the U.S. and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have attained high-level industry certifications in important technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity specialists have earned internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISA, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise in financial systems and ERP application software. This breadth of experience provides Progent the capability to efficiently identify important systems and integrate the surviving components of your IT environment after a crypto-ransomware attack and assemble them into an operational system.
Progent's recovery group deploys state-of-the-art project management tools to orchestrate the sophisticated restoration process. Progent understands the importance of acting quickly and together with a client's management and IT team members to prioritize tasks and to put key systems back online as fast as humanly possible.
Customer Story: A Successful Ransomware Incident Restoration
A client engaged Progent after their company was taken over by the Ryuk crypto-ransomware. Ryuk is believed to have been deployed by Northern Korean state cybercriminals, suspected of adopting techniques exposed from America's NSA organization. Ryuk attacks specific businesses with limited room for operational disruption and is one of the most lucrative iterations of crypto-ransomware. High publicized targets include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a regional manufacturing company headquartered in the Chicago metro area with around 500 employees. The Ryuk attack had shut down all business operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's data protection had been on-line at the time of the attack and were destroyed. The client was actively seeking loans for paying the ransom demand (in excess of $200,000) and praying for good luck, but ultimately called Progent.
"I can't speak enough about the expertise Progent gave us throughout the most stressful time of (our) businesses existence. We had little choice but to pay the hackers behind this attack except for the confidence the Progent team afforded us. The fact that you could get our e-mail and critical applications back online faster than a week was earth shattering. Every single staff member I interacted with or messaged at Progent was amazingly focused on getting us back online and was working 24 by 7 on our behalf."
Progent worked hand in hand the customer to quickly assess and assign priority to the mission critical services that needed to be recovered in order to continue departmental operations:
- Active Directory (AD)
- Email
- Financials/MRP
To begin, Progent followed Anti-virus incident mitigation industry best practices by isolating and cleaning up infected systems. Progent then began the steps of recovering Microsoft Active Directory, the heart of enterprise networks built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange Server messaging will not work without Windows AD, and the businesses' accounting and MRP applications used Microsoft SQL Server, which requires Windows AD for access to the information.
Within 2 days, Progent was able to rebuild Windows Active Directory to its pre-virus state. Progent then helped perform reinstallations and storage recovery of needed systems. All Exchange Server schema and configuration information were usable, which facilitated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to locate intact OST data files (Outlook Off-Line Folder Files) on team desktop computers and laptops in order to recover mail messages. A recent offline backup of the customer's accounting/ERP software made them able to return these vital applications back online. Although significant work remained to recover totally from the Ryuk attack, the most important systems were restored rapidly:
"For the most part, the manufacturing operation showed little impact and we produced all customer orders."
Over the next couple of weeks key milestones in the recovery process were achieved in tight cooperation between Progent engineers and the customer:
- Internal web sites were returned to operation with no loss of information.
- The MailStore Exchange Server exceeding four million historical emails was restored to operations and available for users.
- CRM/Orders/Invoicing/AP/Accounts Receivables/Inventory Control capabilities were completely restored.
- A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was brought on-line.
- Nearly all of the desktop computers were being used by staff.
"A lot of what happened in the initial days is mostly a haze for me, but my team will not forget the care each and every one of your team accomplished to help get our company back. I have been working together with Progent for at least 10 years, possibly more, and each time Progent has come through and delivered as promised. This event was a Herculean accomplishment."
Conclusion
A probable business-killing disaster was evaded due to hard-working professionals, a wide array of knowledge, and close collaboration. Although in hindsight the ransomware incident detailed here could have been identified and blocked with up-to-date cyber security technology and NIST Cybersecurity Framework or ISO/IEC 27001 best practices, staff education, and properly executed security procedures for information backup and applying software patches, the fact is that government-sponsored hackers from China, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and will continue. If you do get hit by a ransomware incursion, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has substantial experience in crypto-ransomware virus blocking, cleanup, and data restoration.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Tony and Chris (and any others that were helping), thanks very much for letting me get rested after we made it through the initial fire. Everyone did an incredible effort, and if any of your guys is in the Chicago area, dinner is my treat!"
