Ransomware : Your Feared Information Technology Disaster
Crypto-Ransomware Recovery ConsultantsRansomware has become a modern cyber pandemic that presents an enterprise-level threat for businesses vulnerable to an assault. Versions of ransomware like the Dharma, CryptoWall, Locky, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for years and continue to cause harm. Newer versions of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, LockBit or Nephilim, plus frequent unnamed newcomers, not only do encryption of online data but also infect any configured system backup. Information synchronized to the cloud can also be ransomed. In a poorly architected system, this can render any restoration impossible and basically sets the datacenter back to zero.

Retrieving services and information after a ransomware attack becomes a race against the clock as the targeted business struggles to contain, clear the ransomware, and resume enterprise-critical activity. Since crypto-ransomware needs time to move laterally, assaults are frequently sprung on weekends and holidays, when successful penetrations are likely to take more time to identify. This compounds the difficulty of promptly assembling and coordinating a capable response team.

Progent provides a variety of solutions for securing organizations from crypto-ransomware penetrations. Among these are staff education to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, along with deployment of modern security gateways with machine learning technology from SentinelOne to detect and extinguish zero-day threats quickly. Progent in addition can provide the services of experienced ransomware recovery engineers with the talent and commitment to re-deploy a breached system as rapidly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Restoration Help
Following a crypto-ransomware invasion, sending the ransom in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that distant criminals will provide the codes to decrypt any of your data. Kaspersky Labs estimated that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never restored their data after having paid the ransom, resulting in more losses. The gamble is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are commonly several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can be in the millions. The alternative is to re-install the mission-critical parts of your Information Technology environment. Without the availability of essential system backups, this requires a broad complement of skills, top notch team management, and the capability to work non-stop until the recovery project is done.

For twenty years, Progent has made available professional Information Technology services for companies throughout the U.S. and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have been awarded top certifications in leading technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's security engineers have garnered internationally-recognized certifications including CISA, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience in financial systems and ERP software solutions. This breadth of experience gives Progent the capability to efficiently identify important systems and integrate the remaining parts of your network environment after a ransomware penetration and assemble them into an operational network.

Progent's security team of experts has powerful project management systems to orchestrate the complex recovery process. Progent knows the urgency of acting quickly and in concert with a customer's management and IT resources to assign priority to tasks and to put essential systems back on line as soon as humanly possible.

Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Intrusion Recovery
A customer contacted Progent after their organization was brought down by the Ryuk crypto-ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been created by North Korean state hackers, suspected of using algorithms exposed from the United States National Security Agency. Ryuk goes after specific businesses with little tolerance for disruption and is among the most lucrative examples of ransomware. Major organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a regional manufacturing company headquartered in Chicago with around 500 workers. The Ryuk intrusion had brought down all business operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's system backups had been online at the time of the attack and were destroyed. The client was actively seeking loans for paying the ransom demand (in excess of two hundred thousand dollars) and wishfully thinking for the best, but in the end utilized Progent.

"I cannot say enough about the care Progent provided us throughout the most fearful time of (our) company's life. We most likely would have paid the criminal gangs if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent group provided us. The fact that you were able to get our e-mail and important applications back faster than five days was earth shattering. Each consultant I talked with or communicated with at Progent was urgently focused on getting us back online and was working breakneck pace on our behalf."

Progent worked hand in hand the client to quickly get our arms around and assign priority to the essential elements that had to be restored to make it possible to restart company functions:

  • Active Directory
  • Microsoft Exchange Server
  • Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To start, Progent followed Anti-virus incident mitigation industry best practices by halting lateral movement and performing virus removal steps. Progent then initiated the process of recovering Active Directory, the core of enterprise networks built upon Microsoft technology. Microsoft Exchange Server messaging will not function without Windows AD, and the businesses' MRP software leveraged Microsoft SQL Server, which requires Active Directory services for authentication to the databases.

In less than two days, Progent was able to re-build Active Directory to its pre-penetration state. Progent then completed rebuilding and storage recovery on mission critical systems. All Exchange schema and attributes were intact, which facilitated the restore of Exchange. Progent was also able to find local OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Data Files) on various PCs in order to recover email information. A recent off-line backup of the customer's financials/ERP systems made it possible to return these essential applications back available to users. Although major work was left to recover completely from the Ryuk damage, the most important services were returned to operations quickly:

"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation did not miss a beat and we did not miss any customer orders."

Throughout the next couple of weeks critical milestones in the recovery process were accomplished through tight collaboration between Progent consultants and the customer:

  • In-house web applications were restored with no loss of information.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server exceeding 4 million historical messages was brought on-line and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Orders/Invoicing/AP/Accounts Receivables/Inventory capabilities were fully operational.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was set up.
  • 90% of the user desktops were being used by staff.

"A lot of what happened in the early hours is mostly a fog for me, but our team will not soon forget the care each and every one of the team put in to help get our company back. I've been working with Progent for at least 10 years, possibly more, and every time I needed help Progent has outperformed my expectations and delivered as promised. This time was a Herculean accomplishment."

Conclusion
A potential business extinction disaster was averted due to results-oriented experts, a broad array of subject matter expertise, and tight collaboration. Although in post mortem the ransomware virus penetration described here should have been stopped with modern security systems and recognized best practices, user and IT administrator training, and appropriate security procedures for information backup and keeping systems up to date with security patches, the reality remains that government-sponsored criminal cyber gangs from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and are not going away. If you do fall victim to a ransomware penetration, feel confident that Progent's roster of experts has a proven track record in ransomware virus defense, removal, and information systems restoration.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Tony and Chris (and any others that were helping), I'm grateful for allowing me to get some sleep after we got through the initial fire. All of you did an incredible effort, and if any of your team is in the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
