Ransomware : Your Crippling IT Nightmare
Ransomware has become an escalating cyber pandemic that presents an enterprise-level danger for businesses of all sizes vulnerable to an attack. Versions of crypto-ransomware such as Dharma, Fusob, Locky, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been replicating for years and continue to inflict havoc. Modern versions of crypto-ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, LockBit or Egregor, as well as daily as yet unnamed malware, not only do encryption of on-line files but also infiltrate many configured system protection mechanisms. Data synchronized to the cloud can also be ransomed. In a vulnerable system, this can make any restore operations hopeless and effectively knocks the network back to square one.
Getting back online applications and information following a ransomware event becomes a sprint against the clock as the targeted business fights to contain, cleanup the crypto-ransomware, and resume business-critical activity. Because ransomware requires time to spread, attacks are often sprung at night, when attacks typically take more time to notice. This multiplies the difficulty of promptly assembling and organizing a qualified response team.
Progent has a range of solutions for securing businesses from ransomware events. These include team training to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, in addition to setup and configuration of modern security solutions with AI technology from SentinelOne to identify and quarantine zero-day threats quickly. Progent in addition can provide the assistance of seasoned ransomware recovery consultants with the talent and commitment to reconstruct a compromised network as soon as possible.
Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Restoration Help
After a ransomware invasion, paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that merciless criminals will provide the needed keys to unencrypt any of your information. Kaspersky Labs estimated that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never restored their data even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The risk is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are typically a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can be in the millions. The fallback is to piece back together the mission-critical elements of your Information Technology environment. Absent access to complete system backups, this calls for a broad complement of skill sets, professional project management, and the willingness to work continuously until the recovery project is complete.
For twenty years, Progent has offered certified expert IT services for companies throughout the United States and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have attained advanced certifications in key technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity specialists have garnered internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISA, CISSP, ISACA CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise in financial systems and ERP software solutions. This breadth of experience gives Progent the skills to efficiently identify important systems and integrate the surviving parts of your Information Technology system after a ransomware attack and rebuild them into a functioning system.
Progent's recovery team of experts uses state-of-the-art project management applications to coordinate the sophisticated recovery process. Progent appreciates the urgency of working swiftly and in concert with a customer's management and Information Technology staff to assign priority to tasks and to get key systems back online as soon as possible.
Client Case Study: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Virus Response
A small business contacted Progent after their company was attacked by Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is generally considered to have been created by North Korean state criminal gangs, possibly using algorithms exposed from America's National Security Agency. Ryuk attacks specific companies with limited tolerance for operational disruption and is among the most profitable instances of ransomware viruses. Well Known victims include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturing company headquartered in Chicago and has about 500 staff members. The Ryuk event had frozen all company operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's backups had been online at the start of the attack and were encrypted. The client considered paying the ransom demand (exceeding two hundred thousand dollars) and wishfully thinking for good luck, but ultimately engaged Progent.
"I cannot speak enough in regards to the care Progent gave us during the most stressful time of (our) businesses life. We most likely would have paid the criminal gangs if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent team provided us. The fact that you could get our e-mail and key applications back quicker than five days was earth shattering. Every single expert I interacted with or e-mailed at Progent was absolutely committed on getting our system up and was working at all hours on our behalf."
Progent worked hand in hand the customer to quickly get our arms around and prioritize the most important systems that had to be recovered in order to restart company functions:
- Windows Active Directory
- Email
- MRP System
To begin, Progent adhered to AV/Malware Processes incident mitigation best practices by halting lateral movement and cleaning up infected systems. Progent then started the work of restoring Microsoft AD, the core of enterprise environments built on Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange messaging will not operate without Active Directory, and the customer's MRP applications utilized Microsoft SQL Server, which requires Active Directory services for authentication to the database.
In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to restore Active Directory services to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then assisted with setup and storage recovery on key systems. All Exchange Server ties and attributes were intact, which facilitated the restore of Exchange. Progent was able to locate non-encrypted OST files (Microsoft Outlook Off-Line Folder Files) on team desktop computers and laptops to recover mail information. A recent off-line backup of the businesses accounting/ERP software made it possible to restore these required services back available to users. Although significant work remained to recover fully from the Ryuk damage, the most important systems were recovered rapidly:
"For the most part, the production operation showed little impact and we delivered all customer orders."
Throughout the next month important milestones in the recovery project were made in close cooperation between Progent engineers and the client:
- Internal web sites were brought back up without losing any data.
- The MailStore Server exceeding four million historical messages was brought online and accessible to users.
- CRM/Customer Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivables/Inventory Control functions were 100 percent functional.
- A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was set up and programmed.
- Nearly all of the desktops and laptops were being used by staff.
"A lot of what happened in the initial days is mostly a fog for me, but I will not forget the care each and every one of you accomplished to help get our company back. I have been working with Progent for the past 10 years, possibly more, and every time I needed help Progent has come through and delivered as promised. This time was a stunning achievement."
Conclusion
A possible business catastrophe was avoided with top-tier professionals, a broad array of subject matter expertise, and close collaboration. Although in hindsight the ransomware virus incident detailed here would have been identified and stopped with up-to-date cyber security solutions and NIST Cybersecurity Framework best practices, user education, and appropriate security procedures for backup and applying software patches, the reality remains that government-sponsored cybercriminals from Russia, China and elsewhere are tireless and will continue. If you do fall victim to a ransomware incident, remember that Progent's team of professionals has extensive experience in ransomware virus blocking, removal, and file disaster recovery.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Tony (and any others who were helping), thanks very much for making it so I could get rested after we got over the most critical parts. All of you did an incredible job, and if any of your guys is around the Chicago area, dinner is the least I can do!"
