Crypto-Ransomware : Your Feared Information Technology Catastrophe
Ransomware Remediation ProfessionalsCrypto-Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyber pandemic that presents an existential threat for businesses of all sizes poorly prepared for an assault. Multiple generations of crypto-ransomware such as CryptoLocker, CryptoWall, Locky, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been circulating for many years and still inflict havoc. The latest strains of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Conti or Egregor, plus frequent unnamed viruses, not only encrypt on-line data files but also infect any accessible system protection mechanisms. Information synchronized to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be corrupted. In a poorly designed system, this can make automated recovery impossible and effectively knocks the network back to square one.

Getting back online services and data following a crypto-ransomware outage becomes a race against time as the targeted business fights to stop lateral movement, clear the ransomware, and restore business-critical activity. Because crypto-ransomware takes time to move laterally, attacks are frequently launched on weekends, when successful penetrations are likely to take more time to discover. This multiplies the difficulty of rapidly assembling and orchestrating an experienced response team.

Progent provides a range of help services for protecting businesses from crypto-ransomware penetrations. These include team training to help recognize and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, in addition to setup and configuration of modern security solutions with AI technology from SentinelOne to discover and suppress day-zero threats automatically. Progent also offers the services of seasoned ransomware recovery consultants with the track record and perseverance to rebuild a compromised environment as soon as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Restoration Help
Soon after a crypto-ransomware attack, even paying the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that criminal gangs will respond with the needed codes to decipher any or all of your files. Kaspersky ascertained that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never restored their data after having paid the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The risk is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are often several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can reach millions of dollars. The other path is to piece back together the mission-critical parts of your IT environment. Absent the availability of full data backups, this requires a broad complement of skills, well-coordinated project management, and the willingness to work continuously until the recovery project is over.

For decades, Progent has offered expert IT services for businesses across the U.S. and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have been awarded top industry certifications in key technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity engineers have garnered internationally-recognized industry certifications including CISM, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Visit Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience with accounting and ERP software solutions. This breadth of expertise gives Progent the ability to efficiently ascertain critical systems and organize the surviving components of your Information Technology environment after a ransomware event and configure them into an operational system.

Progent's security team deploys best of breed project management applications to orchestrate the complicated recovery process. Progent knows the urgency of acting rapidly and together with a client's management and Information Technology team members to prioritize tasks and to put key applications back on-line as fast as humanly possible.

Client Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Incident Recovery
A customer sought out Progent after their network was crashed by the Ryuk crypto-ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been launched by North Korean state criminal gangs, suspected of using approaches exposed from the United States NSA organization. Ryuk seeks specific organizations with little room for disruption and is among the most profitable incarnations of ransomware. Major targets include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a small manufacturing business based in the Chicago metro area with about 500 workers. The Ryuk attack had frozen all business operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's data protection had been on-line at the start of the intrusion and were encrypted. The client considered paying the ransom demand (in excess of two hundred thousand dollars) and hoping for good luck, but ultimately engaged Progent.

"I can't thank you enough in regards to the help Progent gave us throughout the most fearful time of (our) businesses survival. We most likely would have paid the cyber criminals if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent experts gave us. The fact that you could get our messaging and essential servers back into operation in less than five days was amazing. Each expert I spoke to or communicated with at Progent was hell bent on getting my company operational and was working non-stop to bail us out."

Progent worked with the customer to quickly identify and prioritize the essential applications that had to be restored in order to resume business functions:

  • Active Directory
  • Electronic Mail
  • Financials/MRP
To begin, Progent followed AV/Malware Processes incident mitigation industry best practices by stopping the spread and performing virus removal steps. Progent then started the process of restoring Microsoft Active Directory, the foundation of enterprise systems built on Microsoft Windows technology. Exchange messaging will not function without AD, and the businesses' accounting and MRP system used Microsoft SQL, which depends on Windows AD for security authorization to the databases.

Within 48 hours, Progent was able to recover Active Directory to its pre-attack state. Progent then charged ahead with rebuilding and storage recovery on the most important applications. All Microsoft Exchange Server schema and attributes were usable, which greatly helped the restore of Exchange. Progent was able to locate local OST data files (Outlook Offline Folder Files) on staff desktop computers in order to recover email data. A not too old offline backup of the customer's accounting software made them able to restore these essential services back online for users. Although a large amount of work needed to be completed to recover fully from the Ryuk damage, core systems were returned to operations rapidly:

"For the most part, the manufacturing operation survived unscathed and we made all customer deliverables."

Throughout the following month key milestones in the recovery project were achieved in tight cooperation between Progent consultants and the client:

  • Internal web applications were returned to operation with no loss of data.
  • The MailStore Exchange Server exceeding 4 million archived emails was restored to operations and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Customer Orders/Invoicing/Accounts Payable/AR/Inventory Control modules were 100 percent restored.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was set up and programmed.
  • Nearly all of the user workstations were fully operational.

"Much of what was accomplished in the early hours is mostly a fog for me, but our team will not forget the dedication each of you put in to give us our business back. I have entrusted Progent for the past ten years, possibly more, and each time Progent has shined and delivered. This event was the most impressive ever."

Conclusion
A likely business-ending catastrophe was dodged due to hard-working experts, a wide range of subject matter expertise, and close teamwork. Although in retrospect the ransomware penetration detailed here would have been disabled with current security technology solutions and recognized best practices, staff training, and properly executed incident response procedures for data protection and applying software patches, the reality is that government-sponsored cybercriminals from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and are not going away. If you do get hit by a ransomware incursion, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has a proven track record in ransomware virus defense, remediation, and data disaster recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others who were involved), thank you for letting me get some sleep after we got through the first week. Everyone did an incredible job, and if any of your team is in the Chicago area, a great meal is on me!"
