Crypto-Ransomware : Your Feared IT Disaster
Crypto-Ransomware has become a modern cyber pandemic that poses an enterprise-level danger for businesses of all sizes poorly prepared for an attack. Versions of ransomware like the Reveton, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for a long time and still cause damage. Recent variants of crypto-ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Snatch or Nephilim, plus more unnamed viruses, not only do encryption of on-line information but also infect all accessible system backups. Data replicated to the cloud can also be encrypted. In a poorly architected system, this can make automated restore operations hopeless and basically sets the network back to square one.
Recovering services and data after a ransomware event becomes a race against time as the targeted organization tries its best to stop lateral movement, clear the ransomware, and restore business-critical activity. Since crypto-ransomware takes time to move laterally, penetrations are usually launched on weekends, when successful penetrations typically take more time to identify. This multiplies the difficulty of promptly assembling and orchestrating a capable mitigation team.
Progent provides a range of help services for protecting enterprises from ransomware attacks. These include staff education to help identify and not fall victim to phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, along with deployment of next-generation security solutions with AI technology from SentinelOne to discover and extinguish day-zero cyber threats quickly. Progent in addition can provide the assistance of expert ransomware recovery professionals with the skills and commitment to reconstruct a breached network as urgently as possible.
Progent's Ransomware Restoration Services
Subsequent to a crypto-ransomware invasion, sending the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that criminal gangs will provide the needed codes to decipher any of your data. Kaspersky ascertained that seventeen percent of ransomware victims never restored their data after having sent off the ransom, resulting in more losses. The gamble is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are typically several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can be in the millions. The other path is to re-install the essential elements of your IT environment. Absent access to complete data backups, this calls for a broad complement of IT skills, top notch team management, and the capability to work 24x7 until the recovery project is completed.
For two decades, Progent has made available expert IT services for companies throughout the United States and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts includes professionals who have earned high-level industry certifications in leading technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity engineers have earned internationally-recognized certifications including CISM, CISSP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience with financial systems and ERP application software. This breadth of expertise gives Progent the skills to efficiently understand critical systems and re-organize the surviving pieces of your network system following a ransomware event and rebuild them into an operational network.
Progent's security group deploys top notch project management systems to coordinate the sophisticated restoration process. Progent appreciates the urgency of acting swiftly and in concert with a customer's management and IT resources to assign priority to tasks and to put key systems back online as fast as possible.
Customer Story: A Successful Ransomware Attack Restoration
A client escalated to Progent after their organization was crashed by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is generally considered to have been developed by Northern Korean state cybercriminals, suspected of using strategies exposed from America's National Security Agency. Ryuk goes after specific businesses with little or no tolerance for operational disruption and is one of the most profitable iterations of ransomware malware. Headline victims include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a single-location manufacturing company based in Chicago with about 500 staff members. The Ryuk intrusion had shut down all business operations and manufacturing processes. Most of the client's data protection had been online at the start of the intrusion and were encrypted. The client was pursuing financing for paying the ransom (in excess of $200,000) and praying for the best, but in the end brought in Progent.
"I cannot say enough in regards to the care Progent provided us during the most fearful period of (our) businesses existence. We may have had to pay the criminal gangs if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent team provided us. That you were able to get our e-mail system and critical applications back on-line in less than 1 week was amazing. Each person I interacted with or messaged at Progent was absolutely committed on getting us restored and was working all day and night to bail us out."
Progent worked hand in hand the client to quickly identify and prioritize the most important applications that had to be recovered in order to resume business functions:
- Active Directory (AD)
- Microsoft Exchange Server
- Accounting/MRP
To start, Progent adhered to AV/Malware Processes penetration response industry best practices by halting lateral movement and clearing up compromised systems. Progent then initiated the work of recovering Microsoft AD, the key technology of enterprise systems built upon Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange Server email will not function without AD, and the businesses' financials and MRP applications leveraged Microsoft SQL, which needs Active Directory for security authorization to the information.
Within 2 days, Progent was able to recover Active Directory services to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then completed rebuilding and hard drive recovery on key systems. All Exchange data and attributes were usable, which facilitated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was able to collect intact OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Offline Data Files) on user PCs in order to recover email messages. A recent off-line backup of the businesses accounting software made them able to recover these required services back available to users. Although significant work remained to recover completely from the Ryuk damage, core services were restored rapidly:
"For the most part, the manufacturing operation did not miss a beat and we produced all customer shipments."
During the next couple of weeks key milestones in the restoration project were completed in tight collaboration between Progent consultants and the client:
- Internal web applications were brought back up with no loss of data.
- The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server with over 4 million historical emails was spun up and accessible to users.
- CRM/Orders/Invoicing/AP/AR/Inventory Control functions were completely functional.
- A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was deployed.
- 90% of the user workstations were back into operation.
"So much of what happened those first few days is mostly a blur for me, but my management will not forget the care each and every one of you accomplished to help get our company back. I have entrusted Progent for the past ten years, maybe more, and each time Progent has impressed me and delivered as promised. This situation was a Herculean accomplishment."
Conclusion
A probable business disaster was evaded with dedicated experts, a wide spectrum of subject matter expertise, and tight teamwork. Although in hindsight the ransomware penetration detailed here would have been blocked with modern security technology and NIST Cybersecurity Framework best practices, team education, and properly executed incident response procedures for backup and proper patching controls, the fact is that state-sponsored cybercriminals from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and will continue. If you do fall victim to a crypto-ransomware incursion, feel confident that Progent's team of professionals has a proven track record in ransomware virus defense, mitigation, and file disaster recovery.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others who were helping), thank you for allowing me to get some sleep after we got over the initial fire. All of you did an impressive job, and if anyone that helped is visiting the Chicago area, a great meal is the least I can do!"
