Crypto-Ransomware : Your Feared IT Disaster
Ransomware Remediation ConsultantsCrypto-Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyberplague that presents an extinction-level threat for businesses poorly prepared for an assault. Multiple generations of crypto-ransomware such as Reveton, CryptoWall, Locky, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been around for years and still inflict havoc. Newer versions of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Conti or Egregor, along with additional as yet unnamed viruses, not only encrypt on-line critical data but also infect most available system backup. Data replicated to cloud environments can also be held hostage. In a poorly designed data protection solution, it can render automatic restoration hopeless and effectively sets the network back to square one.

Recovering programs and information after a crypto-ransomware attack becomes a sprint against the clock as the targeted business struggles to contain, remove the virus, and resume enterprise-critical operations. Because crypto-ransomware requires time to replicate, penetrations are often sprung during nights and weekends, when successful attacks tend to take longer to notice. This compounds the difficulty of rapidly marshalling and coordinating a capable response team.

Progent offers a range of services for securing enterprises from ransomware events. These include team education to help identify and not fall victim to phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, in addition to deployment of the latest generation security solutions with machine learning technology from SentinelOne to detect and extinguish new cyber attacks automatically. Progent in addition can provide the assistance of expert crypto-ransomware recovery professionals with the skills and perseverance to rebuild a breached environment as soon as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Restoration Services
Following a crypto-ransomware event, paying the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that merciless criminals will return the needed codes to decipher any of your information. Kaspersky estimated that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never restored their data after having paid the ransom, resulting in more losses. The gamble is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are commonly several hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom can reach millions. The fallback is to piece back together the critical components of your IT environment. Absent the availability of full system backups, this requires a broad range of skill sets, professional project management, and the ability to work non-stop until the recovery project is completed.

For decades, Progent has provided certified expert IT services for businesses throughout the United States and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts includes consultants who have been awarded high-level industry certifications in key technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity experts have garnered internationally-renowned certifications including CISM, CISSP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has experience in financial systems and ERP software solutions. This breadth of expertise provides Progent the skills to knowledgably identify important systems and re-organize the surviving parts of your computer network environment following a ransomware attack and rebuild them into a functioning system.

Progent's ransomware team of experts deploys best of breed project management systems to orchestrate the complex restoration process. Progent appreciates the importance of acting swiftly and together with a client's management and IT team members to assign priority to tasks and to get critical systems back online as fast as possible.

Client Case Study: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Incident Recovery
A business contacted Progent after their company was crashed by Ryuk crypto-ransomware. Ryuk is generally considered to have been developed by North Korean state sponsored cybercriminals, suspected of adopting technology exposed from America's NSA organization. Ryuk goes after specific companies with limited tolerance for operational disruption and is one of the most profitable instances of ransomware. Headline organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a regional manufacturing company headquartered in the Chicago metro area and has about 500 workers. The Ryuk attack had frozen all essential operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's information backups had been directly accessible at the beginning of the intrusion and were encrypted. The client considered paying the ransom (in excess of $200K) and hoping for good luck, but ultimately made the decision to use Progent.

"I can't thank you enough in regards to the care Progent provided us throughout the most stressful time of (our) company's survival. We most likely would have paid the cybercriminals if not for the confidence the Progent group gave us. That you could get our e-mail system and important servers back online faster than one week was incredible. Every single expert I talked with or texted at Progent was urgently focused on getting our system up and was working all day and night on our behalf."

Progent worked together with the client to rapidly understand and assign priority to the critical elements that had to be recovered to make it possible to continue business operations:

  • Active Directory
  • E-Mail
  • Accounting and Manufacturing Software
To begin, Progent adhered to ransomware incident response industry best practices by isolating and cleaning up infected systems. Progent then started the task of restoring Microsoft Active Directory, the core of enterprise systems built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange Server messaging will not function without Active Directory, and the businesses' MRP system utilized Microsoft SQL Server, which needs Active Directory for access to the information.

In less than two days, Progent was able to restore Active Directory to its pre-virus state. Progent then completed rebuilding and hard drive recovery on the most important systems. All Microsoft Exchange Server data and attributes were intact, which greatly helped the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was able to locate non-encrypted OST data files (Outlook Email Offline Data Files) on user PCs and laptops in order to recover email data. A recent off-line backup of the customer's financials/MRP systems made them able to recover these essential services back available to users. Although a large amount of work was left to recover fully from the Ryuk virus, the most important services were returned to operations quickly:

"For the most part, the production operation was never shut down and we made all customer deliverables."

Throughout the next month critical milestones in the restoration project were completed through tight cooperation between Progent team members and the customer:

  • In-house web sites were brought back up with no loss of data.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server containing more than 4 million historical messages was restored to operations and available for users.
  • CRM/Orders/Invoices/Accounts Payable/AR/Inventory Control functions were 100% restored.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was installed and configured.
  • Most of the user workstations were operational.

"A lot of what went on in the early hours is nearly entirely a fog for me, but we will not soon forget the dedication all of your team accomplished to help get our business back. I've entrusted Progent for the past ten years, maybe more, and each time I needed help Progent has impressed me and delivered as promised. This event was a testament to your capabilities."

Conclusion
A potential business-ending disaster was evaded by dedicated professionals, a wide range of IT skills, and close collaboration. Although in hindsight the crypto-ransomware virus penetration described here would have been shut down with modern cyber security technology and NIST Cybersecurity Framework best practices, team education, and well thought out security procedures for backup and proper patching controls, the reality remains that state-sponsored cybercriminals from Russia, China and elsewhere are relentless and will continue. If you do fall victim to a ransomware virus, feel confident that Progent's team of experts has a proven track record in ransomware virus blocking, cleanup, and file recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others that were involved), thanks very much for making it so I could get some sleep after we made it through the initial push. All of you did an amazing job, and if any of your guys is in the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
