Ransomware : Your Feared Information Technology Nightmare
Ransomware Recovery ExpertsCrypto-Ransomware has become an escalating cyber pandemic that poses an extinction-level danger for businesses poorly prepared for an attack. Different iterations of ransomware like the CryptoLocker, WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been running rampant for many years and still inflict havoc. Newer versions of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, LockBit or Nephilim, plus frequent unnamed viruses, not only encrypt online data files but also infect all configured system restores and backups. Data replicated to off-site disaster recovery sites can also be corrupted. In a poorly designed environment, this can render automatic restoration hopeless and basically sets the network back to square one.

Getting back on-line services and data following a ransomware attack becomes a race against the clock as the targeted organization struggles to contain the damage, clear the virus, and resume business-critical activity. Due to the fact that ransomware needs time to replicate, assaults are often sprung during nights and weekends, when attacks tend to take more time to identify. This multiplies the difficulty of quickly mobilizing and coordinating a knowledgeable response team.

Progent provides a range of support services for securing enterprises from crypto-ransomware penetrations. These include team member training to help recognize and not fall victim to phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, in addition to installation of the latest generation security appliances with artificial intelligence capabilities from SentinelOne to identify and quarantine zero-day cyber threats automatically. Progent also provides the services of expert ransomware recovery consultants with the talent and perseverance to rebuild a breached network as quickly as possible.

Progent's Crypto-Ransomware Restoration Services
Subsequent to a ransomware penetration, even paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that criminal gangs will return the keys to decrypt any of your data. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that 17% of ransomware victims never recovered their files even after having paid the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The gamble is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are commonly a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom demand can reach millions of dollars. The fallback is to setup from scratch the vital elements of your Information Technology environment. Absent access to complete data backups, this calls for a broad complement of skill sets, well-coordinated team management, and the willingness to work continuously until the recovery project is finished.

For decades, Progent has made available professional IT services for businesses throughout the United States and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have been awarded advanced certifications in leading technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity experts have earned internationally-renowned industry certifications including CISM, CISSP-ISSAP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise with financial systems and ERP application software. This breadth of experience gives Progent the ability to rapidly determine critical systems and integrate the surviving components of your IT environment following a crypto-ransomware penetration and configure them into a functioning network.

Progent's recovery group has top notch project management systems to orchestrate the complex recovery process. Progent appreciates the importance of acting quickly and in unison with a customer's management and IT team members to assign priority to tasks and to get essential services back on line as fast as possible.

Client Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Attack Recovery
A customer hired Progent after their network system was taken over by Ryuk ransomware virus. Ryuk is believed to have been deployed by North Korean state sponsored hackers, possibly adopting algorithms leaked from the U.S. NSA organization. Ryuk targets specific companies with little room for operational disruption and is one of the most lucrative instances of crypto-ransomware. High publicized targets include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a single-location manufacturer located in the Chicago metro area and has about 500 staff members. The Ryuk event had brought down all company operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's backups had been on-line at the beginning of the attack and were damaged. The client was evaluating paying the ransom (in excess of $200,000) and hoping for good luck, but in the end reached out to Progent.

"I cannot speak enough about the support Progent provided us during the most critical time of (our) businesses existence. We most likely would have paid the Hackers if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent team provided us. The fact that you were able to get our messaging and production applications back faster than a week was beyond my wildest dreams. Every single expert I got help from or e-mailed at Progent was urgently focused on getting us operational and was working 24 by 7 on our behalf."

Progent worked together with the client to quickly identify and prioritize the most important applications that needed to be recovered to make it possible to continue departmental operations:

  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Electronic Mail
  • Accounting/MRP
To get going, Progent adhered to ransomware penetration response industry best practices by halting lateral movement and clearing up compromised systems. Progent then began the task of bringing back online Active Directory, the foundation of enterprise networks built upon Microsoft technology. Microsoft Exchange Server email will not work without AD, and the customer's accounting and MRP applications used SQL Server, which needs Active Directory services for security authorization to the databases.

In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to restore Windows Active Directory to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then initiated reinstallations and hard drive recovery of essential applications. All Exchange ties and configuration information were usable, which facilitated the restore of Exchange. Progent was also able to locate local OST files (Outlook Off-Line Folder Files) on team PCs to recover email data. A recent off-line backup of the customer's accounting software made it possible to return these required programs back on-line. Although significant work remained to recover completely from the Ryuk damage, critical systems were recovered rapidly:

"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation survived unscathed and we did not miss any customer sales."

Over the next month important milestones in the restoration process were accomplished through tight cooperation between Progent team members and the customer:

  • Internal web sites were returned to operation with no loss of data.
  • The MailStore Server exceeding four million historical messages was restored to operations and available for users.
  • CRM/Customer Orders/Invoicing/Accounts Payable/AR/Inventory capabilities were fully functional.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was installed and configured.
  • Ninety percent of the user desktops and notebooks were being used by staff.

"Much of what was accomplished in the initial days is mostly a haze for me, but we will not forget the urgency each and every one of the team accomplished to give us our business back. I've been working with Progent for at least 10 years, possibly more, and each time I needed help Progent has outperformed my expectations and delivered as promised. This event was a Herculean accomplishment."

Conclusion
A likely company-ending catastrophe was avoided by hard-working experts, a wide array of technical expertise, and tight teamwork. Although in analyzing the event afterwards the ransomware penetration described here should have been blocked with current cyber security solutions and recognized best practices, user education, and properly executed incident response procedures for information protection and keeping systems up to date with security patches, the fact remains that government-sponsored cybercriminals from Russia, China and elsewhere are tireless and are not going away. If you do get hit by a ransomware virus, remember that Progent's roster of professionals has proven experience in ransomware virus blocking, cleanup, and information systems recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Tony and Chris (along with others that were helping), I'm grateful for letting me get rested after we got over the initial push. All of you did an fabulous job, and if any of your team is visiting the Chicago area, dinner is my treat!"
