Ransomware : Your Worst IT Catastrophe
Ransomware Recovery ProfessionalsRansomware has become a modern cyber pandemic that poses an extinction-level danger for businesses vulnerable to an assault. Multiple generations of ransomware like the Reveton, Fusob, Bad Rabbit, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been running rampant for a long time and still inflict damage. Newer strains of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Snatch or Egregor, plus additional unnamed newcomers, not only encrypt online data but also infiltrate any available system backups. Information synched to the cloud can also be held hostage. In a poorly architected data protection solution, it can make any restoration impossible and basically knocks the entire system back to square one.

Retrieving applications and information after a ransomware attack becomes a sprint against time as the victim struggles to stop the spread, clear the ransomware, and restore business-critical activity. Since crypto-ransomware takes time to move laterally, penetrations are usually launched during weekends and nights, when penetrations typically take more time to recognize. This multiplies the difficulty of promptly marshalling and coordinating a capable mitigation team.

Progent offers a variety of services for securing enterprises from crypto-ransomware events. Among these are user education to help identify and avoid phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, in addition to deployment of next-generation security gateways with machine learning capabilities from SentinelOne to discover and quarantine zero-day cyber attacks quickly. Progent also can provide the services of veteran ransomware recovery engineers with the track record and perseverance to rebuild a breached environment as urgently as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Restoration Support Services
After a crypto-ransomware event, sending the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that distant criminals will respond with the needed keys to decrypt all your data. Kaspersky ascertained that seventeen percent of ransomware victims never restored their information after having sent off the ransom, resulting in more losses. The gamble is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are often a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can reach millions. The other path is to piece back together the critical elements of your Information Technology environment. Without the availability of full system backups, this requires a wide range of skill sets, well-coordinated project management, and the capability to work non-stop until the task is finished.

For twenty years, Progent has offered expert Information Technology services for businesses across the U.S. and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes professionals who have attained high-level industry certifications in foundation technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity consultants have garnered internationally-recognized certifications including CISA, CISSP-ISSAP, ISACA CRISC, SANS GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience in financial management and ERP applications. This breadth of expertise gives Progent the capability to efficiently understand important systems and integrate the surviving components of your IT system following a ransomware attack and rebuild them into an operational system.

Progent's ransomware team of experts utilizes best of breed project management tools to orchestrate the complicated restoration process. Progent understands the urgency of acting quickly and in unison with a customer's management and IT staff to assign priority to tasks and to put critical services back on-line as soon as humanly possible.

Case Study: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Incident Recovery
A customer hired Progent after their company was taken over by Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is generally considered to have been created by Northern Korean state sponsored criminal gangs, suspected of using techniques exposed from America's NSA organization. Ryuk goes after specific organizations with little ability to sustain disruption and is one of the most profitable examples of ransomware. Headline organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing business, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturer located in Chicago with around 500 workers. The Ryuk intrusion had brought down all business operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's data backups had been on-line at the beginning of the intrusion and were damaged. The client was evaluating paying the ransom (in excess of $200,000) and wishfully thinking for good luck, but in the end called Progent.

"I cannot say enough about the support Progent gave us during the most fearful time of (our) businesses life. We may have had to pay the Hackers if not for the confidence the Progent team gave us. The fact that you could get our messaging and critical applications back on-line sooner than a week was beyond my wildest dreams. Each person I spoke to or communicated with at Progent was totally committed on getting us restored and was working 24 by 7 on our behalf."

Progent worked together with the client to rapidly assess and prioritize the mission critical areas that had to be recovered to make it possible to resume departmental functions:

  • Active Directory (AD)
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • Financials/MRP
To get going, Progent followed Anti-virus incident mitigation industry best practices by halting the spread and cleaning up infected systems. Progent then initiated the work of restoring Windows Active Directory, the core of enterprise networks built on Microsoft technology. Microsoft Exchange email will not function without Active Directory, and the businesses' financials and MRP applications leveraged Microsoft SQL Server, which depends on Active Directory for security authorization to the information.

Within 2 days, Progent was able to rebuild Active Directory services to its pre-penetration state. Progent then initiated rebuilding and hard drive recovery on key applications. All Exchange Server schema and attributes were usable, which greatly helped the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was able to find intact OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Off-Line Folder Files) on user workstations and laptops in order to recover email data. A not too old off-line backup of the businesses financials/ERP software made them able to recover these vital services back online. Although a lot of work still had to be done to recover fully from the Ryuk event, essential services were returned to operations rapidly:

"For the most part, the assembly line operation showed little impact and we made all customer sales."

During the next few weeks key milestones in the restoration process were achieved through close cooperation between Progent team members and the customer:

  • Internal web sites were brought back up without losing any information.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server containing more than 4 million archived messages was brought online and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Orders/Invoices/AP/Accounts Receivables/Inventory Control modules were 100% recovered.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 security appliance was brought on-line.
  • Ninety percent of the user PCs were operational.

"Much of what transpired in the early hours is mostly a haze for me, but I will not soon forget the dedication each of you accomplished to give us our company back. I have been working with Progent for at least 10 years, possibly more, and every time I needed help Progent has come through and delivered as promised. This situation was a stunning achievement."

Conclusion
A possible business-ending disaster was averted by hard-working experts, a broad range of knowledge, and tight teamwork. Although in analyzing the event afterwards the ransomware incident described here would have been prevented with current security systems and security best practices, team training, and well thought out incident response procedures for data backup and applying software patches, the fact remains that state-sponsored hackers from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and will continue. If you do fall victim to a ransomware attack, remember that Progent's team of experts has substantial experience in crypto-ransomware virus defense, removal, and data recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others who were helping), thank you for letting me get rested after we made it through the initial push. All of you did an impressive job, and if any of your team is visiting the Chicago area, a great meal is my treat!"
