Ransomware : Your Worst IT Catastrophe
Crypto-Ransomware Remediation ConsultantsCrypto-Ransomware has become a modern cyber pandemic that presents an enterprise-level threat for businesses of all sizes poorly prepared for an attack. Different iterations of ransomware like the Reveton, Fusob, Locky, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for a long time and still cause havoc. More recent versions of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Conti or Nephilim, along with daily unnamed newcomers, not only do encryption of online data files but also infiltrate all accessible system backups. Information synchronized to the cloud can also be ransomed. In a poorly designed environment, it can render automatic recovery impossible and basically sets the datacenter back to zero.

Getting back applications and information after a ransomware attack becomes a sprint against time as the targeted organization struggles to stop the spread, eradicate the virus, and restore enterprise-critical operations. Due to the fact that ransomware needs time to spread, penetrations are usually launched during weekends and nights, when successful penetrations in many cases take longer to identify. This compounds the difficulty of quickly mobilizing and coordinating an experienced response team.

Progent provides an assortment of help services for securing enterprises from ransomware events. These include team member education to help identify and avoid phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring for remote monitoring and management, plus setup and configuration of next-generation security solutions with artificial intelligence capabilities from SentinelOne to detect and disable day-zero cyber attacks intelligently. Progent also provides the assistance of experienced ransomware recovery consultants with the skills and commitment to rebuild a breached system as quickly as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Services
Subsequent to a ransomware event, sending the ransom in cryptocurrency does not provide any assurance that criminal gangs will respond with the needed codes to decipher all your files. Kaspersky Labs determined that seventeen percent of ransomware victims never recovered their information even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in more losses. The risk is also expensive. Ryuk ransoms are commonly several hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can reach millions. The other path is to piece back together the mission-critical parts of your Information Technology environment. Without the availability of full system backups, this calls for a broad range of skills, top notch project management, and the capability to work non-stop until the task is over.

For decades, Progent has provided professional Information Technology services for companies throughout the United States and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's group of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes consultants who have earned high-level industry certifications in foundation technologies including Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and major distributions of Linux. Progent's security consultants have garnered internationally-recognized certifications including CISM, CISSP, CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has experience with financial management and ERP application software. This breadth of experience provides Progent the capability to knowledgably determine important systems and organize the surviving components of your Information Technology system after a crypto-ransomware event and configure them into a functioning system.

Progent's security team deploys powerful project management systems to orchestrate the complex restoration process. Progent appreciates the urgency of working swiftly and in unison with a customer's management and Information Technology team members to assign priority to tasks and to get the most important services back online as soon as humanly possible.

Client Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Intrusion Response
A business sought out Progent after their network system was brought down by Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is generally considered to have been launched by Northern Korean state sponsored criminal gangs, suspected of adopting algorithms exposed from America's National Security Agency. Ryuk goes after specific companies with little or no ability to sustain disruption and is among the most profitable examples of crypto-ransomware. Major targets include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a small manufacturer headquartered in the Chicago metro area and has around 500 staff members. The Ryuk attack had paralyzed all business operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's information backups had been on-line at the time of the attack and were damaged. The client was evaluating paying the ransom (in excess of $200K) and wishfully thinking for good luck, but ultimately called Progent.

"I cannot tell you enough in regards to the support Progent gave us during the most critical time of (our) company's life. We most likely would have paid the cybercriminals except for the confidence the Progent experts gave us. That you were able to get our e-mail system and production servers back into operation faster than a week was amazing. Each expert I talked with or messaged at Progent was totally committed on getting our system up and was working all day and night to bail us out."

Progent worked with the customer to quickly identify and prioritize the critical systems that had to be restored to make it possible to restart business functions:

  • Active Directory (AD)
  • E-Mail
  • Accounting/MRP
To begin, Progent followed AV/Malware Processes penetration mitigation industry best practices by stopping the spread and clearing up compromised systems. Progent then began the task of bringing back online Microsoft AD, the core of enterprise systems built upon Microsoft Windows Server technology. Exchange email will not operate without Active Directory, and the client's MRP system utilized Microsoft SQL Server, which depends on Active Directory services for access to the database.

In less than 2 days, Progent was able to re-build Active Directory services to its pre-intrusion state. Progent then completed reinstallations and storage recovery of needed systems. All Exchange Server schema and configuration information were intact, which accelerated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was able to collect intact OST data files (Outlook Email Offline Folder Files) on team workstations and laptops in order to recover email information. A not too old offline backup of the client's accounting/MRP systems made them able to return these vital programs back online. Although a large amount of work was left to recover fully from the Ryuk attack, essential systems were restored quickly:

"For the most part, the production operation was never shut down and we delivered all customer sales."

During the next month key milestones in the restoration project were completed in tight collaboration between Progent consultants and the client:

  • In-house web applications were returned to operation with no loss of data.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server containing more than 4 million archived messages was brought on-line and available for users.
  • CRM/Product Ordering/Invoicing/Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivables (AR)/Inventory modules were completely operational.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was installed and configured.
  • Most of the user workstations were being used by staff.

"So much of what happened during the initial response is mostly a fog for me, but I will not forget the care all of you accomplished to give us our business back. I've trusted Progent for the past ten years, maybe more, and each time Progent has impressed me and delivered. This situation was the most impressive ever."

Conclusion
A probable business disaster was evaded due to results-oriented experts, a wide range of knowledge, and close collaboration. Although in post mortem the ransomware virus attack described here should have been identified and blocked with advanced security technology and security best practices, user training, and well thought out incident response procedures for information backup and applying software patches, the fact remains that state-sponsored cyber criminals from China, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and are not going away. If you do fall victim to a crypto-ransomware incursion, feel confident that Progent's roster of professionals has proven experience in ransomware virus defense, mitigation, and file disaster recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Tony and Chris (and any others that were helping), I'm grateful for making it so I could get some sleep after we made it over the initial fire. Everyone did an fabulous job, and if anyone is visiting the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
