Crypto-Ransomware : Your Feared Information Technology Catastrophe
Ransomware has become a modern cyber pandemic that represents an enterprise-level danger for businesses of all sizes poorly prepared for an assault. Multiple generations of ransomware such as Reveton, CryptoWall, Bad Rabbit, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for years and still inflict havoc. Modern variants of crypto-ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, DopplePaymer, Conti or Egregor, along with frequent unnamed malware, not only encrypt on-line files but also infiltrate most available system restores and backups. Files replicated to the cloud can also be corrupted. In a poorly designed system, it can render automatic restore operations hopeless and basically knocks the entire system back to zero.
Getting back online applications and information after a ransomware outage becomes a sprint against time as the targeted business tries its best to stop lateral movement, eradicate the ransomware, and restore mission-critical activity. Due to the fact that ransomware takes time to spread, penetrations are frequently launched on weekends, when penetrations typically take longer to uncover. This compounds the difficulty of rapidly marshalling and organizing a capable mitigation team.
Progent offers an assortment of support services for protecting businesses from ransomware penetrations. Among these are user training to become familiar with and avoid phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with setup and configuration of modern security solutions with AI technology from SentinelOne to identify and quarantine zero-day cyber attacks quickly. Progent in addition can provide the services of expert ransomware recovery professionals with the skills and perseverance to restore a compromised system as urgently as possible.
Progent's Ransomware Restoration Services
Subsequent to a crypto-ransomware event, paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not ensure that cyber hackers will return the codes to decrypt any of your data. Kaspersky Labs determined that 17% of crypto-ransomware victims never restored their information after having sent off the ransom, resulting in more losses. The risk is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are commonly a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom demand can be in the millions of dollars. The fallback is to re-install the key elements of your Information Technology environment. Absent access to full data backups, this calls for a wide range of skills, professional team management, and the ability to work non-stop until the recovery project is complete.
For two decades, Progent has made available expert IT services for businesses throughout the United States and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent in addition has experience in financial systems and ERP applications. This breadth of expertise provides Progent the capability to efficiently determine important systems and re-organize the surviving pieces of your network environment following a ransomware attack and assemble them into an operational system.
Progent's recovery group utilizes top notch project management tools to orchestrate the complex restoration process. Progent appreciates the urgency of acting rapidly and in concert with a customer's management and IT resources to prioritize tasks and to get critical systems back online as fast as humanly possible.
Business Case Study: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Virus Recovery
A business escalated to Progent after their network was crashed by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is generally considered to have been deployed by Northern Korean government sponsored cybercriminals, suspected of using strategies leaked from America's National Security Agency. Ryuk targets specific companies with limited tolerance for operational disruption and is among the most profitable instances of ransomware malware. High publicized targets include Data Resolution, a California-based information warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a single-location manufacturer based in Chicago with about 500 employees. The Ryuk intrusion had brought down all company operations and manufacturing capabilities. The majority of the client's data protection had been online at the time of the intrusion and were eventually encrypted. The client was evaluating paying the ransom demand (more than two hundred thousand dollars) and wishfully thinking for good luck, but ultimately made the decision to use Progent.
"I cannot say enough about the care Progent provided us during the most stressful time of (our) businesses life. We had little choice but to pay the hackers behind this attack except for the confidence the Progent group gave us. That you were able to get our e-mail system and production servers back online in less than one week was earth shattering. Every single consultant I spoke to or messaged at Progent was totally committed on getting us back on-line and was working breakneck pace on our behalf."
Progent worked together with the customer to rapidly get our arms around and assign priority to the critical areas that had to be recovered in order to restart departmental functions:
- Active Directory
- Exchange Server
- Financials/MRP
To get going, Progent adhered to Anti-virus incident mitigation best practices by isolating and cleaning systems of viruses. Progent then started the steps of restoring Microsoft AD, the heart of enterprise environments built on Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange email will not function without Active Directory, and the businesses' financials and MRP system utilized SQL Server, which depends on Windows AD for security authorization to the data.
In less than 2 days, Progent was able to recover Windows Active Directory to its pre-attack state. Progent then assisted with setup and storage recovery on the most important systems. All Exchange Server schema and configuration information were intact, which accelerated the restore of Exchange. Progent was able to locate local OST data files (Microsoft Outlook Off-Line Data Files) on staff PCs and laptops in order to recover email messages. A recent offline backup of the client's manufacturing systems made them able to restore these vital programs back on-line. Although a large amount of work was left to recover totally from the Ryuk damage, core systems were returned to operations rapidly:
"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation survived unscathed and we produced all customer shipments."
Over the following month key milestones in the restoration process were accomplished in tight collaboration between Progent consultants and the customer:
- Internal web sites were restored without losing any information.
- The MailStore Exchange Server containing more than four million archived emails was spun up and accessible to users.
- CRM/Product Ordering/Invoices/AP/Accounts Receivables/Inventory modules were 100% recovered.
- A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was installed and configured.
- Most of the user workstations were back into operation.
"A lot of what happened those first few days is mostly a haze for me, but we will not forget the dedication each of your team accomplished to give us our company back. I have been working together with Progent for the past ten years, maybe more, and every time I needed help Progent has impressed me and delivered as promised. This time was a Herculean accomplishment."
Conclusion
A potential company-ending disaster was dodged through the efforts of hard-working experts, a wide array of IT skills, and tight collaboration. Although in analyzing the event afterwards the ransomware penetration described here would have been stopped with up-to-date security technology solutions and NIST Cybersecurity Framework best practices, staff education, and appropriate security procedures for data backup and keeping systems up to date with security patches, the reality is that government-sponsored hackers from Russia, China and elsewhere are tireless and are an ongoing threat. If you do fall victim to a crypto-ransomware incident, remember that Progent's roster of professionals has a proven track record in ransomware virus defense, removal, and information systems disaster recovery.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Tony (and any others that were contributing), thanks very much for allowing me to get some sleep after we made it through the most critical parts. Everyone did an impressive job, and if any of your team is in the Chicago area, a great meal is my treat!"
