Crypto-Ransomware : Your Crippling Information Technology Nightmare
Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyberplague that poses an existential danger for businesses of all sizes unprepared for an assault. Different iterations of ransomware such as Dharma, Fusob, Locky, SamSam and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for years and still inflict destruction. Newer strains of crypto-ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Snatch or Nephilim, along with more unnamed newcomers, not only encrypt online data but also infect many accessible system protection. Information synchronized to cloud environments can also be encrypted. In a poorly designed system, it can make any recovery useless and basically sets the entire system back to zero.
Getting back online services and information following a crypto-ransomware attack becomes a race against time as the targeted business tries its best to stop the spread, cleanup the ransomware, and restore enterprise-critical activity. Due to the fact that crypto-ransomware needs time to move laterally, penetrations are usually sprung on weekends, when successful attacks in many cases take longer to notice. This multiplies the difficulty of rapidly mobilizing and coordinating a capable response team.
Progent provides a variety of services for securing enterprises from crypto-ransomware attacks. Among these are staff training to become familiar with and not fall victim to phishing scams, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, plus setup and configuration of the latest generation security solutions with artificial intelligence capabilities from SentinelOne to detect and suppress new cyber threats rapidly. Progent in addition offers the assistance of seasoned ransomware recovery consultants with the track record and perseverance to rebuild a breached environment as rapidly as possible.
Progent's Ransomware Recovery Services
Subsequent to a crypto-ransomware invasion, paying the ransom demands in cryptocurrency does not ensure that criminal gangs will return the keys to unencrypt any or all of your data. Kaspersky Labs determined that 17% of ransomware victims never restored their information after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The risk is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are often several hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can be in the millions of dollars. The other path is to re-install the essential components of your Information Technology environment. Absent the availability of complete data backups, this calls for a broad range of skill sets, top notch team management, and the capability to work non-stop until the task is complete.
For two decades, Progent has offered certified expert Information Technology services for businesses across the US and has achieved Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes professionals who have earned advanced certifications in important technologies like Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cybersecurity experts have garnered internationally-renowned certifications including CISA, CISSP, ISACA CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent also has expertise with financial systems and ERP application software. This breadth of expertise gives Progent the skills to rapidly determine necessary systems and consolidate the remaining parts of your network environment after a crypto-ransomware penetration and rebuild them into an operational system.
Progent's security team deploys top notch project management tools to orchestrate the complex recovery process. Progent knows the urgency of acting rapidly and in concert with a customer's management and IT staff to prioritize tasks and to get the most important systems back on line as fast as possible.
Customer Case Study: A Successful Crypto-Ransomware Intrusion Response
A business hired Progent after their network was crashed by Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been created by North Korean state hackers, possibly using strategies leaked from America's National Security Agency. Ryuk goes after specific organizations with limited ability to sustain operational disruption and is among the most profitable versions of ransomware viruses. Major victims include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing company, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturing business based in Chicago with around 500 workers. The Ryuk intrusion had brought down all company operations and manufacturing processes. Most of the client's data backups had been directly accessible at the beginning of the intrusion and were damaged. The client was pursuing financing for paying the ransom demand (exceeding two hundred thousand dollars) and wishfully thinking for good luck, but ultimately brought in Progent.
"I can't tell you enough about the help Progent provided us throughout the most stressful period of (our) businesses survival. We had little choice but to pay the criminal gangs if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent group provided us. That you could get our e-mail and important applications back on-line sooner than 1 week was something I thought impossible. Each expert I got help from or messaged at Progent was amazingly focused on getting us operational and was working at all hours to bail us out."
Progent worked hand in hand the client to quickly get our arms around and prioritize the most important areas that needed to be recovered in order to continue business operations:
- Windows Active Directory
- Electronic Messaging
- MRP System
To get going, Progent followed AV/Malware Processes incident mitigation industry best practices by halting lateral movement and cleaning systems of viruses. Progent then initiated the task of bringing back online Windows Active Directory, the heart of enterprise systems built on Microsoft technology. Microsoft Exchange messaging will not work without Windows AD, and the client's financials and MRP applications leveraged Microsoft SQL, which depends on Windows AD for security authorization to the information.
Within 48 hours, Progent was able to rebuild Active Directory services to its pre-penetration state. Progent then completed rebuilding and storage recovery of essential systems. All Exchange Server data and configuration information were intact, which facilitated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to find non-encrypted OST files (Outlook Offline Data Files) on staff desktop computers and laptops to recover email data. A recent off-line backup of the businesses manufacturing systems made them able to restore these required programs back on-line. Although a lot of work remained to recover fully from the Ryuk damage, critical systems were returned to operations rapidly:
"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation did not miss a beat and we made all customer shipments."
Over the next few weeks critical milestones in the recovery project were accomplished in close cooperation between Progent team members and the customer:
- Internal web applications were restored with no loss of information.
- The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server exceeding 4 million archived emails was spun up and accessible to users.
- CRM/Customer Orders/Invoicing/Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivables/Inventory Control capabilities were fully operational.
- A new Palo Alto 850 security appliance was set up.
- Nearly all of the desktops and laptops were operational.
"A lot of what occurred those first few days is nearly entirely a blur for me, but we will not soon forget the countless hours each of the team accomplished to help get our company back. I've been working together with Progent for at least 10 years, possibly more, and every time Progent has shined and delivered. This event was no exception but maybe more Herculean."
Conclusion
A probable business-ending catastrophe was evaded with top-tier experts, a broad array of knowledge, and tight collaboration. Although in retrospect the crypto-ransomware virus penetration described here would have been identified and disabled with current cyber security technology solutions and security best practices, staff training, and well designed security procedures for data protection and proper patching controls, the reality remains that government-sponsored cyber criminals from China, Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are tireless and will continue. If you do fall victim to a ransomware virus, remember that Progent's team of professionals has substantial experience in crypto-ransomware virus defense, removal, and data restoration.
"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (and any others who were contributing), I'm grateful for making it so I could get some sleep after we got over the first week. All of you did an incredible job, and if any of your guys is around the Chicago area, dinner is my treat!"
