ProSight Ransomware Preparedness ReportRansomware has been widely adopted by the major cyber-crime organizations and malicious states, representing a possibly existential threat to companies that fall victim. Modern versions of ransomware target all vulnerable resources, including backup, making even selective restoration a challenging and expensive process. Novel strains of ransomware like Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Phobos, LockBit and Nephilim have emerged, displacing Locky, Spora, and Petya in notoriety, elaborateness, and destructive impact.

90% of ransomware breaches come from innocuous-looking emails with malicious hyperlinks or file attachments, and many are "zero-day" variants that can escape detection by traditional signature-based antivirus (AV) tools. While user education and up-front detection are critical to defend against ransomware, leading practices demand that you expect that some malware will eventually succeed and that you deploy a solid backup mechanism that allows you to recover quickly with minimal losses.

Progent's ProSight Ransomware Preparedness Assessment is an ultra-affordable service built around an online discussion with a Progent security expert experienced in ransomware protection and recovery. In the course of this interview Progent will collaborate directly with your Arlington network managers to gather critical information about your cybersecurity configuration and backup environment. Progent will use this information to create a Basic Security and Best Practices Report detailing how to apply best practices for configuring and managing your security and backup systems to prevent or recover from a ransomware assault.

Progent's Basic Security and Best Practices Report focuses on key areas related to ransomware prevention and restoration recovery. The review covers:

Security

  • Proper use of administration accounts
  • Appropriate NTFS and SMB (Server Message Block) permissions
  • Optimal firewall settings
  • Secure Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connections
  • Guidance for AntiVirus filtering identification and configuration
Backups
  • Split permission architecture for backup integrity
  • Protecting key servers including AD
  • Geographically dispersed backups including cloud backup to Azure
The remote interview process included with the ProSight Ransomware Vulnerability Report service lasts about one hour for a typical small business and longer for larger or more complicated IT environments. The report document includes recommendations for improving your ability to ward off or recover from a ransomware attack and Progent can provide on-demand expertise to help you to design and deploy an efficient cybersecurity/backup solution customized for your specific requirements.

About Ransomware
Ransomware is a variety of malicious software that encrypts or steals files so they cannot be used or are publicized. Crypto-ransomware sometimes locks the victim's computer. To avoid the carnage, the victim is asked to pay a certain amount of money (the ransom), usually in the form of a crypto currency like Bitcoin, within a short period of time. It is not guaranteed that delivering the ransom will recover the damaged files or avoid its exposure to the public. Files can be encrypted or erased across a network based on the target's write permissions, and you cannot break the military-grade encryption technologies used on the hostage files. A common ransomware attack vector is booby-trapped email, in which the target is lured into interacting with by a social engineering technique called spear phishing. This makes the email to look as though it came from a familiar sender. Another popular attack vector is an improperly protected RDP port.

CryptoLocker opened the modern era of ransomware in 2013, and the damage attributed to by different strains of ransomware is estimated at billions of dollars annually, more than doubling every other year. Notorious examples include Locky, and NotPetya. Recent headline variants like Ryuk, DoppelPaymer and TeslaCrypt are more elaborate and have caused more damage than earlier strains. Even if your backup/recovery processes allow your business to recover your encrypted files, you can still be threatened by so-called exfiltration, where stolen documents are exposed to the public. Because new versions of ransomware are launched daily, there is no certainty that conventional signature-matching anti-virus filters will block a new malware. If an attack does appear in an email, it is critical that your users have learned to be aware of phishing tricks. Your last line of defense is a sound scheme for scheduling and keeping remote backups and the use of reliable restoration tools.
